This happened to us at our house! It was so weird to see such a swarm. Donna McNicholas came out and with a paint brush and bucket, as you said, swept them gently off the branches. She too, was hoping for the queen bee, but don’t know if she got it or not. Bottom line, don’t want your kids annoying the swarm and getting stung all over by angry bees!
